Federalism

How federalism Practised ?

Constitutional provisions are necessary for the success of Federalism but these are not sufficie .
To make federalism a success the nature of democratic politics in India has played a vital role.

  1 .   Linguistic States :

After independence in the year 1950 the boundaries of several old states were changed in order to create new states.

Even three states i.e., Uttrakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh were  created in November 2000.

This was done to ensure that the people who speak the same language, share common culture , ethnicity or geography could live in the same state.

    2 .  Language Policy :

In 1956, an Act was passed by Sri Lankan Government to recognise sinhala as the only official language but Indian political leaders have shown flexibility while adopting language policy.

Indian Constitution did not give the status of national language to any of the language.

Besides Hindi, there are twenty two other languages recognised as Scheduled Language by the Constitution.

According to the constitution the use of English for official purposes was to stop in 1965 which was not liked by some of the states.
So, the central government responded by agreeing to continue the use of English along with Hindi as official languages.

     Centre - State Relations :

Improving the centre - state relation is another way in which Federalism has been strengthened in practice.
Through Indian Constitution has demarcated the powers of the Union government can have influence over the state in many ways.

Coalition Government :

A government formed by the alliance of two or more than two parties.

Decentralisation In India

Under decentralisation some of the powers are taken away from centre and state government and given to local government
And i.e., Municipal Committees, Village panchayat and Municipal Corporations.
